Shanklin FC 1st 3-2 Sandown FC 1st 5 Dec 2020 – match report

Saturday we travelled the 2 miles down the road to play our local rivals Shanklin FC, who are flying high in the Division One title race. With the weather having been wet leading up to the game I must say the County Ground looked amazing, well done to Brain Drudge and Mick Newnham on their hard work.

Shanklin FC were always going to put out an experienced older side and this was going to be a test for our young squad of 14. With only 4 players over 23 years of age and 2 under 18 we would get an idea after the 90 minutes if we were up for the fight and capable of holding our own.

The game started in light drizzle and windy conditions and our team talk was to play football along the deck. After 4 minutes Shanklin FC got a free kick on the edge of the box, up stepped Iain Seabrook and the inevitable happened, an unstoppable shot top left – 1 nil Shanklin.

We didn’t let this deter us and kept battling and created opportunities in the Shanklin half, but it was apparent that the blues were a stronger, more experienced side.

Shanklin FC went 2 nil up after 18 minutes and we would now see if the side would fold or fight, but it was never in doubt, we kept fighting and got our just rewards on 43 minutes when Ellery Snow made it 2 -1 after scoring from a well-worked move.

The second half, having changed the formation was totally different for us. We pushed higher up the pitch and created a few good chances. On 48 minutes a good run and cross from Sonny Mulholland down the right saw Lewis Bishtons header just fly over the crossbar. We continued to put pressure on Shanklin FC, but on 56 minutes Shanklin broke away quickly and we found ourselves down 3 -1 which I think at this stage was against the run of play.

On 67 minutes after a good move we got a penalty and Lewis Bishton made it 3 -2 and the game was back on. We continued to press and hit the post a couple of times and in the 89 minute hit the crossbar directly from a corner. The Shanklin Keeper made 3 incredible saves to keep them in the game and time ran out for us to get an equalizer.

Considering both teams had had a 5 week lock down break it was a good game and we would have been happy with a draw, but it wasn’t to be.

FT Shanklin FC 3 -2 Sandown FC

We continue to improve and we have now lost our last 4 games by one goal, but we now need to start getting points. We can’t fault the lads, they battled hard and played some good football which we have tried to install into them through this early part of the season. It was also nice to receive several comments from the Shanklin crew on the talent of some of the lads we have in the team and that’s a credit to the effort these guys put in week after week.

MOTM was Sam Yates who continues to improve week after week and we could not pick a DOTD.

This week see’s us play another top 4 side Brading whom we drew with in the first game of the season.

Team: Riley, Mulholland, Page, Yates, Parkinson, Cook, B Field, Breingan, Snow, Jones, Bishton, Turner, James, Watkins
