Sandown FC 1st v Brading FC 1st 12/12/2020 match report

What a difference a week makes in football. From playing extremely well 7 days prior at Shanklin to this week’s visit of Brading Town FC which was a total contrast.

Always a top 4 team, this was our second meeting of the season after we drew with them on the opening day of the season. We knew this was always going to be a hard game, and we knew that any mistakes would be punished, and that proved to be the case.

With availability and injury issues we brought in two reserve players that had been showing good promise and welcomed Cory Sanderson for his debut.

Disaster struck after 2 minutes when a defensive error allowed Brading to take an early lead. On 5 minutes we found ourselves 2 nil down after a soft penalty was awarded, but we had to keep our heads up and keep playing, which in fairness to the lads we did.

Across the first half we matched Brading across the pitch and the game was pretty open, but they scored their third and after some good persistence we got a goal back through Sam Yates to make the half time score 3 – 1

The half time team talk was to go out and play football and try and take the game to them, we had nothing to lose.

Again the lads played some good football but again silly individual mistakes across the whole pitch were punished and despite a consultation second goal from Jordie Cook straight from a corner (although Sam Yates claimed it skimmed his knee) Brading finished the better side and winners 8 – 2

This season’s side is totally new with 9 of today’s squad playing their first season at the club, and again a very young side including 2 x 17 yrs olds and a 16 yr old that is still learning and developing. But this is another example and lesson to us of how if we make errors they will be punished in this league.

We were better than the score suggests across the 90 minutes, but fair play to Brading, when they had a chance they took it and fully deserved their win.

Sandown FC Club History
A little more about Sandown FC

Sandown Football Club was established in 1880 and is one of the oldest clubs on the Island.

For the first 18 years of its existence, SFC only played friendly matches as the Isle of Wight Football League was not started until 1898.

Over the years, we have had various successes, however in the 70’s & 80s SFC we played Hampshire League Football at the Fairway Park, Sandown.

Regularly playing to crowds of 400+ Fairway park was a real old fashioned ground with a large wooden stand which was regularly packed with local supporters.

Today, SFC plays its home games not far from Fairway Park at Sandown Bay Academy. We have two adult teams and still continue to provide football to the Sandown community 140 years after our predecessors started this great club.
