Sandown FC 1st v East Cowes Sports FC 1st Sat 24 October 2020 match report

On a wet and windy afternoon we entertained East Cowes Sports FC 1st team who we lost 4 – 0 to in a pre season friendly.

Sandown started the better and played some really good football from the back. East Cowes Sports being a tall side were always going to dominate the aerial battle so on deck football was key.

With pressure being piled on the East Cowes Sports back 4 down both wings and through the middle Sandown were soon 1 – 0 up through Jack Turner’s 20-yard shot which went low past the keepers right (18 mins) Within 8 minutes a great through ball from Charlie Page to Lewis Bishton put Sandown through on goal. As Bish skipped past a last-ditch attempt by the ECS CB to bring him down he calmly slotted past the keeper to make it the advancing keeper. 2 – 0

Sandown continued to push and press East Cowes Sports. With 2 minutes to half time Sandown failed to clear and loose ball and in the scramble a wayward shot from East Cowes Sports deflected in for an own goal.

HT 2 -1

The second half started very differently than the first half ended. East Cowes Sports picked up their game and within 5 minutes of the re-start they were level after a well-worked goal. 2 -2

East Cowes Sports continued to pile on the pressure and again after some poor defending at a corner the ball bounced around and was poked into the SFC goal. 2 -3

As East Cowes Sports piled on the pressure using the long ball with the wind the young Sandown side continued to play some good football and on 75 minutes Bish was played through on goal, skipped past the last defender and slotted the ball past the keeper only to see the linesman’s flag go up and the referee bring the playback for the offside. This was hugely disappointing as it was clearly not offside and even more frustrating that our very experienced referee could not see that when Bish received the ball he was onside as he had to run past the last defender.

With 10 minutes reaming Sandown FC were defending well and breaking sporadically, however on 80 minutes after the ball was not cleared on the edge of the box, East Cowes Sports turned over the ball and slotted the ball past the Sandown FC keeper. 2 – 4

Fair play to the lads, they didn’t give up and on 87 minutes we got a consolation goal after Bish slotted the ball past the static East Cowes Sports keeper with a top finish.

Final score 3 – 4

This was our third 4 – 3 defeat in a row with probably 8 out of the 12 goals conceded being our own doing.

We have been playing some really good, exciting attacking football this season, and the day we cut out the defensive mistakes that are costing us results we will become a very good side.

MenOTM were Alek for his leadership at the back and Sam who continues to improve every week.

DOTD was Lee “scouse” Jones, he knows why !
