Sandown FC 1st v Vectis FC, Sat 26 September 2020 – match report

We welcomed newly promoted Vectis FC to Sandown Academy for our first home game of the season. Going into the game unbeaten we knew this was going to be a tough match as Vectis were youthful and well drilled. That said, with an average age of 22 years we too were a young side so it was going to be a good game.

Both sides started well and it was evident that there would be some good football played across the 90 minutes. Sandown were pressing well with a top 2 and Ellery Snow was causing the full backs issues playing out wide.

With Sandown slightly on top Ellery picked the ball up some 25 yards out on the right hand side and after cutting in, and out of nowhere let rip with a shot that flew into the top corner of the Vectis goal, Sandown 1 nil up with a stunning strike.

Vectis started to pick up a bit and started attacking the SFC goal and shortly afterwards were awarded a penalty after Charlie Page slipped and the ball struck his arm on the way down. The penalty was taken to make the score 1 – 1

Sandown responded with pressing football and again Ellery Snow provided the comeback with another wonder strike this time from 20 yards out and into the other top corner of Vectis goal.

HT 2 – 1

The second half started with Vectis putting pressure on the SFC back line and pinned us into our own half for the first 20 minute, however we weathered the storm and on 65 minutes Sam Yates scored from a corner after he poked in from close range. 3 – 1

Sandown were now on top and with a 2 goal advantage started to push onto the Vectis back line and it wasn’t long before Eller Snow picked the ball up on the half way line and after a great run and taking on 3 Vectis players he slotted the ball past the advancing keeper to complete his hatrick.

The game was a good test for 2 young sides and produced some good football, however, it was at times spoiled by some very inconsistent refereeing for both sides. When a player is hacked down and play is waved on but a push in the back is given as a foul players will naturally get upset and players will get injured quite badly.

MOTM Ellery Snow with one of the best Hatricks you will ever see and DOTD goes to Physio Paul Baldwin who decided that he would chase a carrier bag around the pitch firstly on his feet, then his knees and finally on his stomach. Its a good job he is athletic.

Final score 4 – 1 win.

Next week we are away to at home to  Cowes Sports FC Res – Hardwoods Renault Isle of Wight Saturday Football League – Division 1- more details on the fixtures page.
