Brading Town 1st v Sandown FC 1st, Sat 12 September 2020 – match report
Ben Field Brace earns Sandown a draw
In the first game of the season we travelled to Brading Town FC in a Division One clash at the Pete Henry Ground, of the Isle of Wight Hardwoods – Renault Saturday League.
With Ex Brading players Jordie Cook, Matty Oatley and Charlie Page all lining up for us it was always going to be an interesting affair, and a game all the lads were determined to perform in for them.
Brading, kicking down the slope in the first half were using the long ball to their advantage however the Sandown back four kept them under control until the 35th minute when Ollie Wilson picked up a loose back pass and slotted home to make it 1 – 0 to the home side. Dan vale made it 2 – 0 on 42 minutes when he slotted the ball into an open net after a clash with Louis Riley the Sandown keeper.
With play pretty even in the first half Brading took a 2 – 0 lead into the second 45.
Sandown came out for the second half with nothing to lose and took the game to Brading with some good passing football in high areas of the pitch. On 49 minutes, and with Sandown putting pressure on the Brading back four, Ben Field picked the ball up on the left-hand side on the penalty area and curled a great ball high into the Brading goal to make it 2 -1
The second half saw the ball played from end to end but Sandown were now getting on top and after a sustained bout of play on 71 minutes Ben Field slotted home his second from 10 yards after Matt Oatley flicked on from a corner. 2 -2
The game was end to end with Sandown making the most of the space that Brading was leaving across the pitch, however we could not find the 3rd goal.
The final 10 minutes was all about Brading putting pressure on us, but we hung on for a draw.
We fielded 9 new players and 10 under 24 year olds and we were impressed on how they handled themselves. The hard work we have put into pre season with fitness and movement was evident to see, and was pleasing to watch.
Players of note, Sonny and Jack both 17 Years old had great games, Alex Breignan who was drafted into Centre Back and did what we asked of him in leading the back 4, and of course the 2 goal hero Ben Field who again not playing in his favoured position played a great strikers role which earned him MOTM.
There was no DOTD awarded as no-one deserved the accolade.
Next week we are away to Ryde Saints FC at Smallbrook Stadium – more details on the fixtures page.
UTS – We go again
