East Cowes Sports FC 1st v Sandown FC 1st, pre-season friendly, Sat 22 Aug 2020 – match report
In our second pre season match we travelled to ECS who also play in Division One and are always a good solid side.
The weather was dry, but the usual windy conditions of the old GKN site was present and meant that any football had to be on the deck.
Fielding 9 new players in the 14 man squad, 3 of whom were 17 years old, we knew that it was going to be a tough ask as players are still getting used to each other and building confidence in each other. But it was a test we needed and looked forward to.
That said, we started the brightest and playing some good passing football had 4 good chances in the first 20 minutes.
ECS being used to the conditions that are commonplace at this ground used the wind well and took the lead on 38 minutes on their first real shot on target.
ECS sports even to their own admission were lucky to be winning at the break.
HT ECS 1 – 0 SFC
In the second half we continued to play some good football early on but for a 20 minute period and after failing to capitalize on numerous more chances, ECS hit 3 quick consecutive goals to put us on the back foot. In fairness to ECS they knew how to play the conditions and took full advantage of the wind, and all of the goals were well taken.
All said and done it wasn’t a bad result for us. With such a new side, it will take time to gel as a team. We had possession for the majority of the game and created many chances which we have to be better at converting. If you don’t score you cannot win.
The midfield additions of Jordie Cook and Matt Oately have made a difference in how we play and move the ball around. Along with the few players remaining from last season’s side we also have the younger players that are stepping up, Sonny Mullholland, Jack Turner and Brad Cantello all of whom are showing that we have trust in our youth and they are capable of putting a good shift in when asked to do so.
FT ECS 4 – 0 SF
MOTM goes to Jack Turner on his first team debut at 17 years old. Forced into action quicker than we anticipated because of an injury, he dominated the holding midfield position and showed what a good winner and distributor of the ball he is, and we look forward to seeing how he develops over the next few years.
DOTD goes to Jamie Hanmore who’s 32nd minute 20 yard shot, cross, slice, throw in effort was something to behold. Plus he turned up late and forgot the item of the day. £10 for 45 minutes of play. Good effort Jamie.
Thanks also to one of our sponsors Andrew Cooper Photography for the great images and we look forward to seeing more over the course of the season.
